Sphero Painting Pit

I had the privileged to be apart of the STEAM Area Showcase at Bad Axe Middle School this past weekend.  It was such a neat event with so many attractions to see.

I wanted to do something with 20 Spheros that I manage at the Huron ISD, so I decided to create a 10 foot by 10 foot painting pit.  I got this idea from a YouTube video of a tiny painting pit done in New York City.  I decided to maximize as much space I could use in the classroom I was doing this activity in, and that is why I used 10 foot boards.

Here are some of the supplies that you will need to pull this off:
  • Spheros and chargers
  • iPads
  • Four 2'x4's at the length that best fits your space.  I used 10 footers.
  • A drill and screws to create your 2'x4' wooded border
  • A tarp big enough to go under your wooden border.  This will keep you from having a huge mess on your floor
  • A lot of white butcher block paper.  I bought a 3'x150' roll for $20
  • Access to a sink.  If you do not have a sink nearby, fill up a large tub halfway with water to wash off the Spheros when done using them
  • Lots of paper towel
  • Paint of all colors
  • Sphero Nubby Covers (not needed, but these covers can give your painting a different texture)

Painting is one of the most amazing activities in our class. Well, I have started going to a community college near my house, it was not because I lack education, it was just because I wanted to learn more. I attend this community college about twice a month, the best part of it is the painting class. I never knew that I actually love painting, not until I tried it. I hope to get more classes with painting next semester.
